Understanding precious metals and which suits your lifestyle
The metal in which a stone is set can be as important as the stone itself. Here is everything you need to know about choosing between gold and platinum.
The choice of precious metal is one of the most important decisions in fine jewellery. Gold and platinum each have distinct properties, aesthetics, and associations — and the right choice depends on your lifestyle, skin tone, and the look you want to achieve.
18K gold means the piece is 75% pure gold, alloyed with other metals for strength and colour. Yellow gold is warm, classic, and flattering on olive and dark skin tones. White gold is plated in rhodium for a bright, modern look. Rose gold has a romantic warmth that flatters virtually everyone.
Platinum is a naturally white metal — it never needs plating and retains its colour permanently. It is denser and more durable than gold, making it the ideal choice for engagement rings and pieces worn daily. It is also hypoallergenic, making it suitable for sensitive skin.
At ARCHANGEL, we use only 18K gold and Platinum 950 in our collections. We believe that the metal quality is as important as the stone quality — a philosophy that defines the weight and wearability of every piece we create.
If you are choosing a piece for everyday wear, we typically recommend platinum or 18K white gold for its durability. For statement pieces worn on special occasions, the warmth of 18K yellow or rose gold adds a timeless richness that is hard to match.
